Public support crucial in fight against drugs, terrorism: DIG NKR

Bandipora, Dec 17: Deputy Inspector General of Police, North Kashmir Range (NKR), Maqsood-ul-Zaman on Wednesday said the police are regularly engaging with people to understand their problems, with a key focus on tackling terrorism, drug trafficking and other crimes in the region.

Talking to reporters in this North Kashmir district, the DIG said, “Interacting with the public and listening to their concerns is a routine part of policing. We are connecting with people and listening to their problems. We talk about issues in society. This is a routine job and nothing new.”

Maqsood-ul-Zaman said the police seek cooperation from the public in maintaining peace and security.  “Force wants to contribute to the overall development of the country, with particular attention to issues faced by the youth. The youth face many problems. Often, the way their issues are presented is not correct.”

On the issue of narcotics, he said the police have adopted an aggressive approach over the past year. “If we talk about drugs, we have been very aggressive since last year. We have carried out seizures and registered FIRs,” he said.

The DIG said investigations are being strengthened by establishing both forward and backward linkages to dismantle entire drug networks. “We want to destroy the entire ‘nasur’ (menace). Our aim is to destroy all the properties that people have created through illegal activities,” he said.

He added that operations against drug trafficking and other crimes are ongoing. However, the DIG declined to share details of police strategies. “This is not the appropriate forum to discuss our operational strategy,” he said.

The police, he said, will continue their efforts against terrorism, drugs and crime while maintaining regular engagement with the public to ensure peace and development in north Kashmir—(KNO)
