MLA Kupwara raises alarm over ‘mismanaged’ healthcare services

Kupwara, Dec 20: Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Kupwara, Mir Mohammad Fayaz on Saturday expressed serious concern over the deteriorating healthcare situation in the district. He accused health department officials of deliberately undermining the Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Kupwara and mishandling essential services.

During a hospital visit, the MLA criticized the Chief Medical Officer for ‘irresponsibly relieving a Kupwara doctor before a replacement arrived’. “This disruption in medical services, he stated, caused unnecessary hardship to patients.”

“The inefficiency and ‘politically motivated’ decisions of officials have created chaos at SDH Kupwara. People are being made to suffer unnecessarily, as if the hospital has been deliberately pushed into crisis,” he alleged.

Kupwara MLA questioned the posting of the incumbent CMO, who previously had served as Block Medical Officer (BMO) in Kupwara for six years. “Why is the same officer repeatedly posted here? It raises serious doubts about the intentions behind such decisions,” he said.

“Those who work sincerely are being transferred, while inefficiency goes unchecked. This seems like an attempt to deepen the crisis,” he said.

The MLA during the visit demanded posting of a permanent BMO at SDH Kupwara. “I have raised this matter with the Director and the government many times, but they show no seriousness. On one hand, the government talks of easing public inconvenience, but on the contrary, we continue to face acute staff shortages,” he said.

He added that patients are being forced to travel to Srinagar hospitals for basic treatment due to the shortage of doctors and facilities in Kupwara. “I will now act firmly to fulfill the expectations of the people who elected me,” he vowed—(KNO)
