Light snowfall expected at isolated higher reaches till Jan 21
Rain, snow forecast to intensify thereafter
Srinagar, Jan 15: Minimum temperatures across Jammu and Kashmir showed a slight rise at most places on Thursday compared to the previous day, while the weather department forecast light snow at scattered locations till January 21 and a wet spell between January 22 and 24.
As per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), in the Kashmir Valley, Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 3.9 degrees Celsius on Thursday, up from minus 5.2 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. Qazigund recorded minus 4.7 degrees Celsius, compared to minus 5.3 degrees Celsius the previous day, while Pahalgam recorded minus 5.0 degrees Celsius, up from minus 6.0 degrees Celsius.
Kupwara recorded a minimum of minus 4.9 degrees Celsius, higher than minus 6.2 degrees Celsius a day earlier. Kokernag registered minus 1.1 degrees Celsius, compared to minus 2.3 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. Gulmarg recorded minus 3.2 degrees Celsius, slightly higher than minus 3.8 degrees Celsius.
At Srinagar airport, the mercury settled at minus 5.0 degrees Celsius, compared to minus 6.0 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. Awantipora recorded minus 4.8 degrees Celsius, up from minus 6.4 degrees Celsius, while Budgam recorded minus 4.8 degrees Celsius, compared to minus 5.4 degrees Celsius.
Pulwama and Shopian each recorded minus 6.1 degrees Celsius, compared to minus 7.0 degrees Celsius and minus 7.5 degrees Celsius, respectively, a day earlier. Anantnag recorded minus 5.7 degrees Celsius, up from minus 6.6 degrees Celsius. Baramulla recorded minus 2.2 degrees Celsius, compared to minus 1.8 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, showing a marginal dip.
In the Jammu region, Jammu city recorded a minimum of 4.4 degrees Celsius, slightly higher than 4.0 degrees Celsius the previous day. Jammu airport recorded 5.4 degrees Celsius, compared to 4.8 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. Katra recorded 6.8 degrees Celsius, up from 5.5 degrees Celsius.
Bhaderwah recorded minus 0.1 degrees Celsius, compared to 0.5 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, while Udhampur recorded minus 0.4 degrees Celsius, down from 1.0 degrees Celsius. Rajouri recorded 0.3 degrees Celsius, compared to minus 0.6 degrees Celsius a day earlier. Poonch recorded 4.4 degrees Celsius.
In Ladakh, Leh and Hanle had recorded minus 11.4 degrees Celsius each on Wednesday, while Kargil recorded minus 10.0 degrees Celsius and Nubra Valley minus 10.4 degrees Celsius.
The weather department said there would be no significant weather activity till January 21, with light snow at scattered places during January 16 and January 19–20. From January 22 to 24, there is a possibility of light to moderate rain or snow at most places.
The department also indicated the possibility of moderate to heavy rain or snow over a few districts of the Chenab valley and south Kashmir during January 23 and 24.
An advisory has been issued warning of moderate to dense fog over the plains of the Jammu division for the next two days. Travellers have been advised to plan their movement accordingly in view of the expected wet spell and to follow traffic and administrative advisories. (KNO)
