Jammu, Jan 12: In a significant development, the Jammu & Kashmir Government has said that a policy regarding the establishment of private universities in the Union Territory has been framed.

In a written response to a cut motion moved by Peoples Conference MLA Sajad Gani Lone, according to news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Minister in‑charge of Higher Education Sakina Itoo said that a policy for setting up private universities in Jammu & Kashmir has been prepared.

“…the demands regarding the setting up of private universities in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir have been framed by the Higher Education Department following comprehensive deliberations and are currently under examination in the Department of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs,” she said.

She added that cases for establishing private universities will be examined once the policy is approved. “As and when the policy is approved, all such cases will be examined on a case‑to‑case basis,” she said.

The minister further said that currently there is no private university in the Union Territory, but demands have been received for their establishment, and it is also the need of the hour. (KNO)
