Wildlife Board urges officials to explore crop damage compensation for farmers

Srinagar, Mar 14: In a significant move, the Wildlife Board for Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir has asked officials to explore possibility of compensating damages caused to crops by wild animals.

In its 6th meeting held on December 29, 2025, the Board discussed problems faced by farmers due to wild boar, blue bull (nilgai), and monkeys damaging agricultural fields.

According to the record note of the meeting, a copy of which in possession of news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the Board desired that the possibility of compensating farmers for such losses be explored.

“Issues relating to damage to agricultural crops caused by wild boar, blue bull and monkeys were also discussed. The Board desired that the possibility of compensating famers for losses caused by wild animals be explored,” reads minutes of the meeting.

The meeting was chaired by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and was attended Minister for Forests, Environment and Ecology Javed Ahmad Rana, Chief Secretary and officials from different departments.

Farmers across Jammu & Kashmir face heavy losses every to their agricultural crops due to wild animals such as monkeys, wild boar and blue bull (nilgai), and monkeys. These animals often, destroying standing crops, which directly impacts livelihoods in rural areas. (KNO)
