{"id":19247,"date":"2026-05-07T20:00:46","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T20:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kashmirthunder.in\/?p=19247"},"modified":"2026-05-07T20:00:46","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T20:00:46","slug":"indus-waters-treaty-remains-in-abeyance-since-pahalgam-terror-attack-mea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kashmirthunder.in\/index.php\/2026\/05\/07\/indus-waters-treaty-remains-in-abeyance-since-pahalgam-terror-attack-mea\/","title":{"rendered":"Indus Waters Treaty remains in abeyance since Pahalgam terror attack: MEA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>\u2018India has every right to defend itself against cross-border terrorism\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Srinagar May 07: The Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday reiterated that India\u2019s response to cross-border terrorism remains firm and uncompromising, as the country marked the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor.<\/p>\n<p>Briefing reporters in the national capital, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, according to the news agency\u2014Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said India gave a \u201cbefitting reply\u201d to Pakistan following the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 civilians, mostly tourists were killed.<\/p>\n<p>He said the world had seen the attack \u201cfor what it was\u201d and noted that India continues to face the challenge of cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>Jaiswal said India reserves the right to defend itself against terrorism and added that New Delhi has been consistently working to strengthen global cooperation in the fight against terror. \u201cThe world is aware that cross-border terrorism has long been used as an instrument of state policy by Pakistan. India has every right to defend itself against such threats,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>On the Indus Water Treaty, the spokesperson said the agreement remains in abeyance in view of Pakistan\u2019s continued support to cross-border terrorism. He added that Islamabad must \u201ccredibly and irrevocably\u201d end its support for such activities.<\/p>\n<p>The Indus Waters Treaty, which governs the sharing of river waters between India and Pakistan, was put in abeyance after the Pahalgam terror attack last year, marking a significant shift in bilateral arrangements.<\/p>\n<p>Officials said key water infrastructure, including the Baglihar Dam on the Chenab in Jammu and Kashmir\u2019s Ramban district, continues to remain operational with gates closed even a year after the decision.<\/p>\n<p>Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, 2025, was carried out in response to the Pahalgam terror attack and targeted terror infrastructure across the Line of Control and deep inside Pakistan. Officials said the strikes were part of a calibrated tri-services operation aimed at dismantling terror networks.
