Roads, bridges, buildings and public infrastructure are all reflections of an engineer’s vision and capability,” Wani said.

Highlighting the need for long-term thinking in infrastructure development, Wani said engineers should not limit their work to present-day requirements alone.

“The biggest thing is to expand your thinking. Work in a manner that your contribution is remembered in the future. The projects you execute should serve not only today’s generation but future generations as well,” he said.

Referring to SKICC, where the event was held, Wani described the convention centre as an example of visionary planning and engineering excellence, noting that it continues to serve Jammu and Kashmir decades after its construction.

“Today we are sitting in SKICC. When this facility was built, its planners thought far ahead of their time. Even today, it continues to serve Jammu and Kashmir and remains one of the most important public assets. Its design, utility and relevance have endured,” he said.

He said such infrastructure becomes the identity of a place and reflects the legacy of those who build it.

“This is the kind of work that gets remembered. Such projects become the identity of a place and the legacy of those who built them,” he added.

Wani also expressed hope that Jammu and Kashmir, under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, would witness the creation of similar landmark infrastructure projects in the coming years.

“I want that during our time we create such infrastructure and public assets that people decades later will acknowledge and appreciate. Jammu and Kashmir should receive projects that become examples for the future,” he said.

Congratulating the newly-appointed engineers, Wani said their selection reflected their merit and hard work and urged them to uphold professionalism in public service. “Make your name through your work.
