These hospitals are not charity institutions; they run on operational costs that include salaries, medicines, equipment maintenance and utilities. When government reimbursements are delayed for months, it becomes impossible to sustain quality care. The association’s warning that several hospitals were on the verge of collapse was\u00a0a cry for help from an essential pillar of the region’s healthcare system. The assurance given by the CEO of ABPMJAY\/SEHAT Scheme to begin releasing pending payments is a positive first step. However, the government must go beyond temporary fixes and ensure that timely payments become the norm, not the exception. Delays in reimbursements create uncertainty, erode trust, and ultimately hurt the poorest patients who depend on the scheme the most. The government must recognise that private hospitals are partners in delivering healthcare to the underprivileged. If this partnership is to succeed, payments must be cleared on time, every time. The two-week window given by the association should be used by the authorities not just to clear old dues, but to put in place a robust mechanism that prevents such crises in the future. The JKPHDA has shown responsibility by putting patients first. Now it is up to the government to match this responsibility with prompt action.
