Two peer-reviewed studies published in 2026 have delivered a stark warning that Kashmir cannot afford to ignore: the Valley faces a serious earthquake risk, and it is woefully unprepared for the consequences. The science is unequivocal. Kashmir lies in a seismically active region with a network of active faults, including the Balapur Fault beneath the Valley. Historical records document destructive earthquakes in 1555, 1669, 1736, 1779, 1828, and 1885. The 2005 Kashmir earthquake killed over 80,000 people. Statistical analysis suggests a 40 per cent probability of an earthquake of magnitude 7.6 or greater occurring within 100 years. This is not a distant threat; it is a ticking clock. What makes the situation even more alarming is the vulnerability of the built environment. Around 98 per cent of Srinagar’s buildings are masonry structures with extremely poor seismic resistance. Downtown Srinagar, with its dense construction, narrow roads, and limited open spaces, is particularly at risk. Schools and hospitals are largely not earthquake-resistant. Traditional construction systems like Taq and Dhajji Dewari, which performed better under lateral forces, have been abandoned. Equally concerning is the lack of a disaster-preparedness culture. As Professor Shakil Ahmad Romshoo has pointed out, politicians, Imams, and community leaders rarely discuss earthquake safety. Preparedness cannot remain confined to government agencies; it must become a community movement. The government has acknowledged the risk, placing the entire Union Territory in Seismic Zone VI and initiating structural audits. But audits alone are not enough. What is needed is strict enforcement of earthquake-resistant building codes, widespread retrofitting of existing structures, functional early-warning systems, regular public drills, and sustained awareness campaigns. Kashmir cannot wait for a catastrophe to act. The time for preparedness is now. Every building that collapses in a future earthquake will be a failure not of nature, but of foresight. The question is not whether an earthquake will strike, but whether we will be ready when it does. The answer, at present, is deeply unsettling.<\/p>\n
