Srinagar, Jan 06: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday virtually inaugurated Integrated Ski Training Course being held simultaneously at Gulmarg and Sonamarg.<\/p>\n
Officials told the news agency\u2014Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the initiative aims to promote winter sports and tourism across leading destinations in the Union Territory. \u201cThe programme aims to provide certified training to around 500\u2013600 youngsters in the 12\u201318 age group this season,\u201d they said, adding, \u201cThe move is a part of the Tourism Department\u2019s efforts to nurture local skiing talent and position the Valley as a leading winter sports hub.\u201d<\/p>\n
At Gulmarg, trainees were seen brimming with excitement on their first day on the slopes. \u201cIt\u2019s our first day of skiing and we are really enjoying it,\u201d said one of the participants, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to interact with the Chief Minister.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want to become professional players and shine. This course has earlier produced international-level athletes, and we too hope to follow that path,\u201d another skier added.<\/p>\n
Director Tourism Kashmir, Qamar Sajad said that the department\u2019s vision is to strengthen adventure tourism. \u201cWe foresee a day when many youth from Kashmir will participate in national and international skiing competitions.
