BRO makes history, keeps Zojila Pass open in winter
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterWhatsapp

Srinagar, Mar 09: In a major boost to winter connectivity to Ladakh, the strategically important Zojila Pass remained open during the winter season this year, marking a historic milestone.

Brigadier Rahul Oberoi, Chief Engineer Project Vijay said, “Keeping the Zojila Pass open for such a long duration during winter is a major strategic and logistical achievement. It ensured the continued supply of essential commodities to Kargil and other parts of Ladakh during the holy month of Ramadan.”

He said that about a decade ago, the pass used to remain closed for nearly five months during winter, isolating Ladakh from the rest of the country. However, with the induction of modern technology, advanced snow-clearance equipment and improved operational planning, the Border Roads Organisation has been able to extend the operational period of the pass.

He added that despite heavy snowfall and avalanche threats this winter, the road remained closed for only four days.

Highlighting the strategic importance of the route, he said that Ladakh has only two major road connections with the rest of India — the Srinagar–Kargil–Leh highway via Zojila and the Manali–Leh highway. Keeping at least one axis open ensures uninterrupted movement—(KNO)
