Srinagar, Mar 09: The Government of India on Monday informed the Lok Sabha that Jammu and Kashmir generates around 665 million litres per day (MLD) of sewage, while the installed sewage treatment capacity in the Union Territory stands at 218 MLD.

In a written reply to an unstarred question, Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Kirti Vardhan Singh said that the operational sewage treatment capacity in J&K is about 93 MLD, while the actual utilisation of installed capacity is around 49 MLD.

The data, based on the “National Inventory of Sewage Treatment Plants in India–2021” prepared by the Central Pollution Control Board, highlights the gap between sewage generation and treatment capacity across several states and Union Territories, including J&K.

The government said steps are being taken to strengthen sewage treatment infrastructure through schemes such as the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and Smart Cities Mission, aimed at improving sewage treatment, recycling and reuse of treated water in urban areas—(KNO)
