The Fearless Path To Innovation

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had a simple but powerful message for the young entrepreneurs of Jammu and Kashmir at the ASCEND J&K 2026 Startup Summit in Srinagar: do not be afraid to fail. He reminded everyone that innovation cannot grow without taking risks. His words come at a time when the region is slowly waking up to the power of startups. Right now, Jammu and Kashmir has around 1,300 to 1,400 startups. But the goal is to double that number by next year. This is not just a number. It is a sign that young people are ready to build, create, and solve problems. The fear of failure has held back too many brilliant minds. Young people worry about what others will say. They worry about losing money. They worry about being laughed at. So they never try. But history tells us that every great success came after many failures. Thomas Edison did not succeed the first time he tried to invent the light bulb. He learned from each attempt and kept going until he got it right. That is the spirit we need today. The innovations on display at the summit show that our youth are already thinking about real problems. Some have created sensor-based systems to stop pipes from freezing in winter. Others have made smart water meters to reduce waste. There are hailstorm protection nets for farmers, carbon monoxide detectors, and gas safety devices. These are solutions born from everyday life. The government has promised to back risk-taking entrepreneurs. Seed funds have been distributed. Idea challenges have been launched for school and college students. Mentorship and market access are being provided. But governments can only do so much. The real change must come from young people themselves. Keep dreaming, keep trying, and never be afraid to fail. Your future, and the future of Jammu and Kashmir, depends on it.
