Pause, Verify, Report

A video call comes. On the screen is a man in police uniform, holding what looks like an official ID card. He says your Aadhaar is linked to a serious crime. He warns you not to tell anyone. He tells you to transfer money to prove you are innocent. Many people, even educated ones, have believed this and lost their savings. This is the “digital arrest” scam, and it is spreading. The first thing to remember is simple: there is no law in India that allows the police to arrest you over a video call. No genuine officer will demand money to clear your name. If someone does, it is a fraud. End the call. Do not argue. Do not explain. Just stop. The second thing is to verify. Do not use the number the caller gives you. Look up the official number of the police station or the agency yourself, and call them. Ask a family member. Ask a friend. Break the isolation the fraudster is trying to create. Fear works best when a person is alone and in a hurry. Forensic science can help catch these criminals. Digital records, call logs, bank transactions and money trails can be traced. But investigation takes time, and money once gone is hard to recover. So, prevention is better than cure. The cybercrime helpline 1930 and the portal cybercrime.gov.in exist for this purpose. Report quickly. Every minute matters. Banks, schools and the media must also do their part. Awareness is the cheapest and strongest defence. A simple message should reach every household: a uniform on a screen proves nothing, a threatening voice proves nothing, and an official-looking document can be fake. In the end, the best protection is a moment of calm. Pause. Verify. Report. A few seconds of clear thinking can save a lifetime of savings.
