MeT warns of heavy rainfall, flash floods, landslides from Aug 9-11
Srinagar, Aug 06: Widespread rainfall lashed several parts of Kashmir on Thursday, while a hailstorm accompanied by strong gusty winds damaged apple orchards in parts of Shopian district and a shepherd was killed after being struck by lightning in Kupwara.
According to the details available with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) several areas across the Valley recorded heavy rains during the day, bringing a temporary respite from warm weather but also triggering weather-related incidents in some districts.
The worst impact was witnessed in Shopian district, where a hailstorm coupled with strong winds swept through several villages, causing extensive damage to apple orchards.
The affected villages include Dangam, Wanagam, Kachdora, Kaprin, Hanjipora, Braripora, Rakhama and Zaipora, with the Kachdora belt witnessing the maximum impact, locals said.
The storm, accompanied by heavy rainfall, lasted for around 10 to 20 minutes.
As per preliminary local estimates, nearly 60% of the standing apple crop has been damaged in some areas. However, the extent of losses is yet to be officially assessed, and the district administration has not released any damage report so far.
The Horticulture Department is also yet to issue an official assessment or advisory regarding the losses.
SHEPHERD KILLED BY LIGHTNING
Meanwhile, a shepherd was killed after being struck by lightning in the Dutibegh area of the Keran sector in Kupwara district on Thursday morning.
Officials identified the deceased as Shahmeer Ahmad Khatana, son of Abdul Rasheed Khatana, a resident of Warsun in Kralpora.
The incident occurred during heavy rainfall in the area. Police have taken cognisance of the matter.
The Meteorological Centre, Srinagar, has forecast light to moderate rain and thundershowers at many places across Jammu and Kashmir on August 7 and 8, with brief intense showers expected at isolated locations.
It said the Union Territory is likely to witness light to moderate rain at most places between August 9 and 11, with heavy rainfall and brief intense showers likely in a few districts.
The MeT office has warned that torrential rain and intense showers during the period may trigger flash floods and landslides at vulnerable locations, advising people to remain cautious. (KNO)
