JAMMU, SEPTEMBER 14: The NSS Unit of Government College for Women Parade Ground, in collaboration with the Office of the Chief Medical Officer, organised a Grassroots Intervention and Community Training Programme on the Rehabilitation Module under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, J&K.
The three-day training programme, being held from 14th to 16th September 2026, is aimed at strengthening grassroots-level awareness, intervention and community-based approaches for the prevention of substance abuse and rehabilitation. In accordance with the communication issued by the Office of the Chief Medical Officer, Jammu, three faculty members from Government Degree Colleges of District Jammu participated in the training along with NSS and NCC students of GCW Parade Ground. A total of 70 participants attended the programme.
District Health Officer Dr. Sophia formally introduced the programme and highlighted the significance of coordinated community-level intervention in addressing substance abuse.
The expert sessions were delivered by Dr. Balkes Razia, Occupational Therapist; Reefat Iqbal, Nurse, Addiction Treatment Facility (ATF), GMC Jammu and Dr. Neelam Raini, Medical Officer, ATF, GMC Psychiatric Hospital. The resource persons sensitised the participants on identification of cases, early recognition of substance-use-related concerns, community counselling, referral mechanisms and rehabilitation-oriented interventions.
The training also emphasised the important role that educational institutions, faculty members and student volunteers can play in creating awareness, identifying vulnerable individuals at the grassroots level and facilitating timely counselling and referral for appropriate support.
Dr. Naveen Anand, Principal, Government College for Women, Parade Ground, Jammu, welcomed the resource persons, faculty members and student participants. He appreciated the initiative under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan and stressed the need for sustained community engagement and awareness among young people.
Dr. Gurpreet Kour, NSS Programme Officer, GCW Parade Ground and Coordinator of the event, coordinated the programme and delivered the vote of thanks.
Dr. Atiya Syed, NSS Programme Officer and Dr. Nitu Sharma, ANO, NCC, GCW Parade Ground, were also part of the organising team and contributed to the smooth conduct of the programme.
