Time To Balance Development With Environmental Conservation

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha’s call to redefine development models is a timely intervention that deserves serious attention from policymakers, scientists, and citizens alike. Climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution are not separate crises moving on parallel tracks; they are three faces of a deeper, interconnected problem. The Earth’s natural systems are finite and deeply linked. Population growth, economic expansion, and the ever-increasing demand for food, energy, water, and other resources are equally interconnected. Yet government departments continue to address water, forests, and climate in isolation. This fragmented approach must end. The challenges of our time demand integrated solutions, not departmental silos. Equally urgent is the need to bridge the gap between science and policy. There is no shortage of data or technological tools. What is missing is the institutional will to translate scientific knowledge into timely action. The sooner this distance is bridged, the sooner we can confront the climate crisis with the urgency it demands. Scientists must be encouraged to think beyond disciplinary boundaries, and policymakers must be trained to understand the language of science and act on it. Development must establish a relationship in which use is accompanied by responsibility, progress by conservation, and rights by duties. The destruction of infrastructure and development assets by natural disasters in Jammu and Kashmir and across India is a stark reminder that conventional development approaches are no longer viable. If India is to become a developed nation, we must redefine what development means. Climate-resilient and inclusive models are not optional; they are essential. The real work begins now. The dialogue must reach universities, institutions, and policymaking processes. It must ultimately reach the people. Only then can we hope to balance development with environmental conservation and build a future that is both prosperous and sustainable.
