A Relief That Reaches The Roots

The advance release of Rs 171 crore to 8.55 lakh flood-affected farmers in Jammu & Kashmir is a powerful statement of solidarity from the Central government toward those who feed the nation. This installment of the PM-KISAN scheme, facilitated under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and executed by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, demonstrates a governance model that is both compassionate and responsive. For farming communities devastated by recent floods and landslides, this direct benefit transfer is a critical lifeline. It enables them to purchase seeds, repair damaged fields, and sustain their families during this precarious period. The additional support of Rs 85.62 crore for housing reconstruction under PMAY-Gramin, along with increased MGNREGA workdays, reflects a holistic approach to rehabilitation that addresses both immediate needs and long-term recovery. The proactive role of the J&K administration, led by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, in coordinating with the Centre has been instrumental in ensuring that assistance reaches beneficiaries swiftly and transparently. Their collaborative efforts highlight a shared commitment to farmer welfare, transcending political lines in the service of the public good. This initiative also highlights the success of direct benefit transfers in reducing leakages and ensuring that assistance reaches those who need it most. By empowering farmers, including over 85,000 women, with financial autonomy, the government is restoring dignity and agency. Such sustained support will be crucial in revitalising the agrarian economy. The assurance of prompt compensation under crop insurance schemes and continued central backing offers hope and stability to farmers facing an uncertain future. In moments of crisis, true leadership is measured by its capacity to care. Through this decisive action, the Central and J&K governments have shown that when it comes to farmer welfare, they stand united, proving once again that no one will be left behind in India’s journey toward progress.
