Friday Brief: Embrace Contentment Through Gratitude

In our daily lives, it’s easy to focus on what we don’t have. We chase after more money, a better job, or a bigger house, thinking this will make us happy. But this chase often leaves us feeling empty. Islam offers a beautiful solution to this feeling: the practice of thankfulness. In the Quran, God makes a powerful promise: “If you are grateful, I will certainly give you more” (Quran 14:7). This means that being thankful isn’t just good manners; it’s like a key that unlocks more blessings. When we appreciate what we have, no matter how small, we open the door for more good to come our way. The Quran constantly reminds us to be thankful for the simple things we often take for granted—our sight, our hearing, and our ability to think. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was the perfect example of a thankful person. He spent so much time in prayer that his feet would swell. When asked why he did this, he simply said, “Should I not be a thankful servant?” For him, thankfulness was shown through action. It was about using his life in God’s service. His teachings give us simple, practical advice. He taught us to say “Alhamdulillah” (All praise is for God) throughout the day. He also gave us a powerful tip for feeling happier: instead of looking at people who have more than us, we should look at those who have less. This one habit alone can wipe away feelings of jealousy and make us see our own lives as full of blessings. So, Islamic thankfulness is a three-step practice: feeling it in your heart, saying it with your tongue, and showing it through your actions by using your blessings in good ways. It is the real secret to a contented heart. In a world that always tells us we need more, gratitude helps us see and appreciate the amazing gifts we already have. It is a direct path to peace and a closer connection to God.
