Ensure Labour Rights And Welfare For Inclusive Growth

Labour rights have long been the backbone of any progressive society, ensuring that workers are protected, valued, and provided with opportunities for a dignified life. In Jammu and Kashmir, recent initiatives like the “Shramik Swasthya Utsav” underscore the importance of prioritising worker welfare and health, which are critical components of a robust labour rights framework. The event, organised by the Employees’ State Insurance Society (JKESIS), exemplifies a commendable effort to bridge gaps in healthcare access for insured workers and their families. Such initiatives are vital in regions where economic activities are intertwined with the well-being of the workforce. They serve as a reminder that economic development must go hand-in-hand with social security and health coverage, especially for the marginalised and informal sectors that often lack safety nets. Labour rights extend beyond mere legal protections; they encompass access to quality healthcare, fair wages, safe working conditions, and social security. Jammu and Kashmir’s focus on health awareness through community-driven programs demonstrates an understanding that a healthy workforce is a productive one. The provision of free medical check-ups, diagnostic tests, and occupational health counselling not only alleviates immediate health concerns but also fosters a culture of preventive care. However, such initiatives must be sustained and expanded. Labour rights must be embedded within broader economic policies that promote job security, fair wages, and safe workplaces. In a region grappling with socio-political challenges, ensuring the welfare of workers can also contribute to social stability and economic resilience. The government and relevant stakeholders must ensure that workers in the unorganised sector, who often remain outside formal social security schemes, are integrated into these protective frameworks. This inclusivity is essential for equitable growth and social justice. The emphasis on health and welfare initiatives like the Swasthya Utsav reflects a positive shift towards recognising workers as vital contributors to society’s development. Upholding labour rights in Jammu and Kashmir requires continuous effort, policy reinforcement, and community engagement. When workers are protected and empowered, the entire society benefits, paving the way for sustainable and inclusive progress. It is a collective responsibility to ensure that labour rights are not just theoretical ideals but living realities for every worker in the region.
