PM Modi’s IBSA Vision Deserves Support From International Community

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address at the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) summit in Johannesburg represents a significant articulation of the Global South’s legitimate demand for a more equitable world order. His assertion that UN Security Council reform is “no longer an option, but a necessity” captures the urgent need to democratise global governance institutions that remain frozen in a 20th-century power structure. This call reflects the aspirations of billions who seek fair representation in international decision-making. The Prime Minister’s proposals demonstrate a forward-looking approach to South-South cooperation. The suggestion to establish an ‘IBSA Digital Innovation Alliance’ is particularly visionary, offering a practical framework for sharing India’s successful digital public infrastructure, like UPI and CoWIN, with partner nations. This initiative could accelerate digital inclusion across three continents while ensuring that technological sovereignty remains with developing nations. Equally commendable is Modi’s emphasis on combating terrorism without double standards, which is a clear reference to the selective condemnation that has long plagued global counter-terrorism efforts. By proposing institutionalised NSA-level meetings, he seeks to create concrete mechanisms for security cooperation rather than remaining content with symbolic declarations. With IBSA members having consecutively held G20 presidencies, the grouping has demonstrated its capacity to shape global agendas around human-centric development. Modi’s call for a global compact on AI, in which he emphasised human oversight, transparency, and restrictions on malicious use, shows India’s growing leadership in navigating emerging technological challenges. These initiatives reflect a sophisticated understanding of 21st-century diplomacy where technology, security, and institutional reform intersect. By positioning IBSA as a bridge between three continents and three major democracies, PM Modi has outlined a vision of multilateralism that is both inclusive and action-oriented. With the world grappling with fragmentation, this emphasis on unity, cooperation, and shared development offers a constructive path forward that deserves wholehearted support from the international community.
