Srinagar, Dec 19: Jammu and Kashmir has received over ₹180 crore as Central assistance under several development missions focused on strengthening basic amenities for the urban poor, including water supply and sewerage, the Union Government informed Parliament today.

In a written reply to Lok Sabha, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs said Jammu and Kashmir was sanctioned ₹158.6 crore in the year 2022–23, while ₹25 crore in 2025–26 under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and AMRUT 2.0. This makes the total Central assistance released during the last three years ₹183.6 crore.

The Ministry said, “the urban development, including basic services for the poor, falls under the purview of States and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).”

It also mentioned that the Centre provides financial and programmatic support through flagship missions such as AMRUT, AMRUT 2.0, Swachh Bharat Mission–Urban (SBM-U) and PMAY-Urban. The official data revealed that Jammu and Kashmir has made considerable progress in improving water supply and sanitation infrastructure.

Under AMRUT, AMRUT 2.0 and convergence schemes, 78,305 new or serviced tap water connections have been provided across urban areas of the Union Territory. Additionally, 3.32 lakh households in J&K have been brought under sewerage networks and septage management systems, leading to a notable improvement in sanitation facilities, particularly in densely populated and underserved urban areas.

The Ministry clarified that projects under AMRUT are aimed at improving essential urban infrastructure, including water supply, sewerage and septage management, storm water drainage, green spaces and non-motorised transport, with States empowered to plan, approve and execute projects as per local needs.

The funds, under these missions, are disbursed to States and UT administrations, which then allocate resources to cities and ULBs for on-ground implementation, ensuring targeted delivery of basic urban services, especially to economically weaker sections—(KNO)
