Friday Brief: The New Year & Time For Self-Introspection
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterWhatsapp

As the calendar turns to 2026, the world engages in celebration and resolution. However, this moment holds a deeper, more profound significance rooted in the timeless Islamic practice of Muhasabah—rigorous self-accounting. The turn of the year is not merely a change of date but a powerful, natural reminder of the passage of our most precious capital: time itself. The Quran repeatedly calls us to reflect on time, declaring, “By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience” (Surah Al-Asr). This new beginning is, therefore, a divine prompt to pause and look inward. The Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) emphasised this daily spiritual audit, advising, “Take account of yourself before you are taken to account [on the Day of Judgment]” (Al-Tirmidhi). The new year amplifies this call. It is a moment to weigh our deeds against our faith, to ask the essential questions: Have our prayers been a source of humility or mere habit? Has our wealth been purified through Zakāt and charity, or hoarded in heedlessness? Have our tongues been instruments of truth and kindness, or of backbiting and harm? This introspection is not for despair but for course correction—a spiritual recalibration towards our ultimate purpose: the pleasure of Allah (SWT). This process, guided by the Quran and Sunnah, must be honest and holistic. We must assess our obligations to Allah, to our own souls, to our families, and to the wider Ummah and humanity. Are we contributing to justice, compassion, and knowledge, or are we passive observers in a suffering world? Let 2026, then, be a year where we move beyond superficial resolutions to foundational repentance (Tawbah) and steadfast improvement (Istiqamah). Let us use this milestone to renew our covenants, mend broken ties, seek knowledge, and increase in righteous action. The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Let us shed with it our spiritual neglect and resolve to meet our Lord with hearts that are heavier with good deeds and lighter with sin. For in this sincere self-accounting lies the path to true success, in this world and the hereafter.
