Power generation capacity of J&K to rise by 47% in upcoming fiscal

Srinagar, Feb 09: In the upcoming fiscal, ‘Jammu and Kashmir is all set to have nearly 47 percent of extra hydro power generation capacity’.

According to the official figures available with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Jammu and Kashmir will have an additional 1685.7 Megawatts (MWs) of power generation capacity in addition to the existing 3540.15 MWs.

It also said that by the financial year 2030-31, Jammu and Kashmir will have 7314.85 MWs of power generation capacity.

The figures revealed by the government in the Legislative Assembly states that “The UT of J&K has 32 existing power projects with aggregate capacity of 3540.15 MW. This includes projects of aggregate capacity 1197 MW in the UT sector, 6 projects of aggregate capacity 2250 MW in the Central sector and 12 Projects of aggregate capacity 92.75 MW in the IPP (private) sector.”

“A capacity addition of 3704.5 MW is expected through eight proposed and six under construction Hydroelectric Power Projects (HEPs) in the UT of J&K in the next 5 years Viz 2026-27 to 2030-31,” the government said.

Stating the breakup wise details, the government further informed that in the financial year 2026-27 four HEPs will be commissioned including the 1000 MWs Pakaldul, 624s MW Kiru and 12 MW Karnah as well as 49.70 MWs (IPP JAKEDA).

It also said that in the 2027-28 financial year, 540 MWs Kwar and 37.5MWs Parnai projects will be commissioned.

The government further informed that in the financial year 2029-30, the 850 MWs Ratle, 240 MWs Uri-I Stage-II and 260 MWs Dulhasti-II as well as 20.50 MW (IPP JAKEDA) projects will be commissioned.

For the financial year 2030-31, the authorities said that 93 MWs New Ganderbal and 48 MWs Lower Kalnai projects will be commissioned. (KNO)
