SRINAGAR, FEBRUARY 21: Social Welfare Department (SWD) Srinagar, through SANKALP–Hub for Empowerment of Women (Mission Shakti), organized a comprehensive sensitization programme on “Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat” at Hamidi Kashmiri Memorial Government Degree College with the aim of fostering awareness, responsibility, and collective action against child marriage.

The programme, as per an official statement, was designed to educate students about the social, legal, psychological, and health-related consequences of child marriage while reinforcing the importance of continued education, gender equality, and informed decision-making. It sought to empower young minds to recognize their rights and responsibilities and to actively contribute towards building a just and equitable society.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, faculty members, and distinguished guests, reflecting the strong commitment of the academic community towards social reform. A keynote address was delivered by a representative from the District Legal Services Authority Srinagar, who elaborated on the legal safeguards available under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006. The speaker emphasized the legal age of marriage, penalties for violations, and the role of youth in reporting and preventing such practices within their communities.

Interactive sessions formed a key highlight of the programme. Students actively engaged in discussions, shared perspectives, and participated in poster presentations and speeches that creatively conveyed powerful messages against child marriage. The vibrant exchange of ideas not only enhanced understanding but also encouraged critical thinking and social responsibility among participants.

Addressing the gathering, officials from SANKALP–Hub underscored that education is the strongest weapon to eradicate deep-rooted social evils such as child marriage. They reiterated that sustainable change begins with awareness and collective action, stating that youth play a vital role in transforming society.

The programme concluded with a collective pledge by students to spread awareness, uphold gender equality, and support initiatives aimed at making India free from child marriage. The initiative reflects the continued commitment of the Department of Social Welfare, Srinagar, towards empowering women and safeguarding the rights and dignity of children through sustained community engagement and awareness campaigns.
