Srinagar, Mar 06: The demand for traditional Kashmiri bakery items is witnessing a significant surge across the Valley in the ongoing month of Ramadan.

From busy markets to small neighbourhood bakeries, people are seen lining up to purchase a variety of traditional Kashmiri rotis that form an essential part of Ramadan meals in many households.

These traditional bakery items are prepared in special tandoors fueled by firewood. Bakers said that popular varieties, including Chulcha, Roath, Afghani Roti, Bagerkhani, and Makai Roti, are witnessing high demand this year.

Local bakers said that despite the intense heat from the tandoors and the long working hours, they continue to prepare fresh and hygienic products for customers.

“It is very difficult to work in front of high flames, but we do it so that the people of Kashmir do not face any difficulties during Suhoor and Iftar,” a local baker said.

However, bakers expressed concern over the rising prices of flour in the market, saying that the increasing costs are affecting their livelihood. They urged the government to provide relief to traditional Kashmiri bakers so that they can continue their trade without financial burden.

Renowned traditional baker Manzoor Ahmad from Ganderbal said the demand for bakery products increases significantly during Ramadan.

“During this holy month, there is a huge demand for traditional Kashmiri rotis. We ensure hygienic and high-quality products to customers,” he said.

Another renowned traditional baker, Ashraf Ahmad, said Kashmiri bakery items hold deep cultural and religious importance during Ramadan.

“Traditional Kashmiri rotis are an important part of Sehri and Iftar in almost every household. Despite challenges, we are committed to maintaining quality and meeting the growing demand during Ramadan,” he said.

To meet the increased demand, many bakers have stepped up production while ensuring that customers receive fresh bakery items throughout the holy month—(KNO)
