Festivals, river rituals, Tawi Mahotsav mark festival

Srinagar, Apr 14: Baisakhi was celebrated with religious fervour and cultural enthusiasm across Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, with devotees thronging gurdwaras, riversides and community spaces.

According to the details available with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) the festival, which marks the harvest season and the foundation of the Khalsa Panth, witnessed large gatherings in Jammu as people took ritual dips in rivers, especially along the Tawi and participated in traditional fairs and community celebrations.

In Jammu city, festivities were amplified with the ongoing Tawi Mahotsav, featuring cultural programmes, traditional melas, food festivals and riverfront activities aimed at celebrating heritage and promoting public engagement.

Officials said the three-day event beginning today included Tawi Aarti, cultural shows and family-oriented activities, drawing large public participation.

Meanwhile, gurdwaras across Kashmir also witnessed special prayers, kirtans and community gatherings, with devotees offering prayers and participating in langars to mark the auspicious day.

Extending greetings, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha wrote on X that Baisakhi is a reminder of the contributions of farmers and the teachings of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. “This festival stands as a reminder of the sacrifices of our farmers,” he said, urging people to follow the ideals of unity and selfless service.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also greeted the people on X, saying the festival symbolizes prosperity, hope and communal harmony.

“Such occasions strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and inclusiveness,” he said. (KNO)
