Pandits call return emotional, hope for permanent comeback; DC terms it ‘sign of normalcy’
Baramulla, Apr 30: Kashmiri Pandits on Thursday returned to the historic Ganesh Temple at Kachua Muqaam in Baramulla in North Kashmir after nearly 36 years, reviving a pre- 1989 tradition that once drew large gatherings from different communities.
Located around 15 kilometres from Baramulla town, the temple used to host annual congregations on April 29 and 30. However, the practice had stopped in 1990.
On Thursday morning, devotees assembled at the Temple and performed Hawan as part of Ganesh Utsav, marking a significant moment for the community. The event saw participation and support from local Muslim residents, who helped facilitate the gathering.
Members of the Pandit community described the return as emotional and symbolic. “We are happy to be back in our village,” they said, adding that the visit carries hope for a larger return in future.
Calling it a beginning rather than a full return, they said the moment reflects a deeper longing. “It is a trial. It is not ghar vapasi yet, but by God’s grace we are here. Wandd Cxali Sheen Gali, Bie E Bahaar. We hope for that Bahaar when we will be back permanently,” they said.
Community members also acknowledged the role of local Muslims, district administration and security agencies in ensuring smooth conduct of the event.
Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Syed Fakhruddin Hamid, termed the reopening of the temple a sign of normalcy. He said it reflects unity and brotherhood on the ground and congratulated both Muslim and Pandit communities for the occasion.
He said suggestions from the community have been received and will be examined. The DC added that the district administration plans to construct a Yatri Niwas at the site and will felicitate renovation of the temple. He also said that efforts will be made to promote Kachua as a destination for pilgrimage and religious tourism. (KNO)
