Ganderbal, May 08: The Sub-Divisional Magistrate Kangan has issued an advisory urging people to stay away from open water bodies amid a rise in water levels in various nallahs and canals across the sub-division.

According to the advisory, a growing number of people, including youth, children and elderly persons, have been venturing near unsafe water bodies such as Nallah Sindh, Wangath Nallah, PDC Canal and Barwalla Waterfall, despite the absence of proper safety infrastructure and rescue mechanisms.

The advisory states that recent as well as past incidents have shown that such activities often lead to fatal drowning cases, causing immense tragedy to families and communities.

“People have been strongly advised not to venture, enter or play near open water sources under any circumstances. Parents and guardians have also been asked to maintain strict vigil over children and prevent them from going near nallahs and other water bodies,” it stated.

Meanwhile, the administration has directed the Assistant Executive Engineer CMD/Generation USHP-II Kangan and Assistant Executive Engineer Flood Control Division Ganderbal to activate field staff for maintaining strict vigil at vulnerable spots.

Tehsildars of Kangan and Gund have been asked to mobilise Lumberdars and Chowkidars to assist in surveillance and discourage risky activities, while SHOs of Kangan, Ganderbal, Gund and Sonamarg have been directed to keep strict vigil in and around water bodies—(KNO)
