Say Valley’s true identity lies in its people, culture, breathtaking landscapes

Srinagar, Jul 15: Calling Kashmir “far more than the headlines,” an Argentine couple on Wednesday said the Valley’s true story lies in its breathtaking landscapes, warm-hearted people and rich cultural traditions that deserve to be experienced firsthand.

The duo also urged the world not to judge Kashmir solely through conflict-related headlines, saying they hope to return as there is still much of the Valley left to explore once more trekking routes and remote destinations reopen.

Speaking exclusively to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Florencia Bernal (37), a COBOL developer and Maximiliano Gattari (41), a restaurant owner, both from Buenos Aires, Argentina, said Kashmir had long been on their travel bucket list because of its mountains and unique cultural heritage.

The couple said they arrived with concerns shaped by international media coverage but left with an entirely different perspective.

“We mostly heard about the political situation and security concerns before coming. But what we discovered was breathtaking landscapes, genuinely kind people and a culture that deserves to be known beyond the headlines,” they said.

Having travelled to Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Aru Valley, Wular Lake and Jammu, the visitors said Aru Valley emerged as their favourite destination because of its peaceful surroundings and spectacular scenery.

The couple described Kashmiri hospitality as among the finest they have experienced anywhere in the world, saying several local families invited them into their homes for tea and conversations.

“The memories we will take back are not just of beautiful places but of the people we met. Their warmth and generosity made this journey unforgettable,” they said.

They said they felt safe throughout their visit and found locals willing to help at every step. However, they expressed disappointment that many trekking routes and remote tourist destinations remained inaccessible.

“We wanted to explore more of Kashmir, especially places like Gurez Valley and other hiking destinations, but many of them were closed due to restrictions. We hope to return once they reopen because there is still so much of Kashmir left to discover,” they said.

The visitors also praised Kashmiri cuisine, particularly the traditional Wazwan, calling it one of the highlights of their journey.

Describing Kashmir in three words, they said: “Hospitable, genuine and unforgettable.”

The couple urged travellers, particularly those from Argentina and other parts of the world, to visit Kashmir with an open mind.

“Don’t come only for the landscapes. Meet the people, learn about their culture and experience their hospitality. That’s what truly makes Kashmir special,” they said.

“If we could tell the world one thing after this visit, it would be this: don’t judge Kashmir only by what you see in the news. Its true spirit lives in its people, culture and extraordinary landscapes,” they added. (KNO)
