Heavy showers forecast in Jammu division; Sgr records 25.7°C, 4.2 degrees below normal
Srinagar, Jul 30: Intermittent light to moderate rain and thundershowers are likely to continue across Jammu and Kashmir till August 7, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of brief intense heavy showers, torrential rain, flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas of the Jammu division over the next few days.
An official of the Meteorological Centre Srinagar told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that one or two spells of light to moderate rain and thundershowers are expected at most places on July 31, mainly during the afternoon/evening and early morning hours. The weather office said a few places in the Jammu division could witness brief intense heavy showers or torrential rain.
On August 1, scattered places across the Union Territory are likely to receive a spell of light rain or brief thundershowers, accompanied by isolated intense showers.
The MeT office has forecast light to moderate rain and thundershowers at many places from August 2 to August 4, particularly during the afternoon/evening and early morning hours, with the possibility of heavy rain and brief intense showers or torrential rain over a few districts of the Jammu division.
From August 5 to August 7, scattered places are expected to receive light to moderate rain or thundershowers with brief intense showers.
The MeT has issued an advisory warning of heavy rain or brief intense heavy showers over a few districts of the Jammu division on July 30, July 31, August 2 and August 3.
It cautioned that torrential rain or brief intense heavy showers could trigger flash floods, landslides, mudslides and shooting stones at vulnerable locations, urging people and authorities to remain vigilant.
Meanwhile, weather data released by the MeT office revealed that Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 25.7 degrees Celsius, which was 4.2 degrees below normal, while the minimum settled at 19.2 degrees Celsius, slightly 0.3 degrees above normal. The city recorded trace rainfall during the past 24 hours.
In Kashmir division, Qazigund recorded a maximum of 24.4°C, Pahalgam 20.6°C, Kupwara 26.3°C, Kokernag 23.5°C, Gulmarg 18.0°C, and Konibal 26.0°C. Trace rainfall was reported at Srinagar, Pahalgam and Konibal, while Gulmarg received 0.4 mm of rain.
In the Jammu division, Jammu recorded a maximum temperature of 31.3°C, followed by Kathua at 33.0°C, Katra 28.2°C, Banihal 26.1°C, Batote 25.1°C, and Bhaderwah 25.6°C. Rainfall during the past 24 hours measured 4.4 mm in Bhaderwah, 0.5 mm in Banihal, 0.2 mm in Batote, while Jammu, Katra and Kathua recorded no rainfall.
Among the other stations followed by Ramban at 35.2°C in the Jammu region. Sonamarg received 3.5 mm of rainfall, while Anantnag, Kishtwar and Doda recorded 1.0 mm each, Udhampur and Jammu received 0.6 mm and 0.4 mm respectively, and Awantipora and Srinagar recorded trace rainfall.
The highest rainfall was recorded at Amarnath, which received 11.5 mm during the past 24 hours, the MeT office said. (KNO)
