Handwara, Aug 01: A seven-year-old nursery student was killed after being struck by a boulder that rolled down from a nearby hillside during a mudslide near his school in the Mawer area of Handwara on Saturday, officials said.
An official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the incident occurred during the lunch break when, amid a mudslide, a boulder rolled down from the adjacent hillside and struck the child outside the school premises.
He said the boy was immediately shifted to the Primary Health Centre (PHC) Qalamabad, where doctors declared him brought dead.
The deceased was later identified as Rehan Ahmad (7), son of Reyaz Ahmad Dar, a resident of Khudi, Mawer and a nursery student.
The incident has triggered grief across the area. Authorities have initiated an inquiry and further investigation is underway. (KNO)
