Budgam, Aug 04: As they travelled to New Delhi to receive the prestigious National Handloom Award from President Droupadi Murmu on National Handloom Day, master Kani shawl artisans Manzoor Ahmad Hajam and Fayaz Ahmad Wani of Kanihama, Budgam, termed the recognition a “great honour” not only for them but for the entire artisan community of Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking exclusively to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) over the phone, the awardees said they were overwhelmed after being selected for one of the country’s highest honours in the handloom sector.
“We are extremely happy and thankful to Almighty Allah. I have been associated with Kani shawl weaving for the past 30-35 years and have received several non-government awards, but receiving this national honour from the President is truly special,” one of the artisans said.
The awardees said the recognition reflects the Central Government’s and the Handloom Department’s commitment towards encouraging and supporting traditional artisans.
Highlighting the challenges faced by the sector, Fayaz Ahmad Wani said the biggest hurdle today is not the market or customers but society’s perception of artisans.
“The real challenge is that artisans still do not receive the social respect they deserve. Even today, an artisan faces difficulties in society, including while seeking marriage alliances. Unless society changes its mindset and gives equal dignity to artisans, the future of this craft cannot become brighter,” he said.
He said Kani shawl weaving remains a lifelong source of livelihood, adding that even elderly artisans continue to earn with dignity.
“There is no retirement in this profession. Even an 80 or 90-year-old artisan can continue earning through this craft. We have artisans nearing 100 years of age who are still working,” he said.
The awardees said there is strong international demand for authentic Kashmiri Kani shawls and buyers continue to wait for handcrafted products from the Valley.
They expressed hope that the National Handloom Award would inspire the younger generation to take up the traditional craft.
“When we return after receiving this honour, it will certainly motivate our children and youth. Such recognition creates pride and encourages the next generation to preserve this heritage,” they said.
Fayaz Ahmad Wani said he has trained more than 50 artisans, many of whom are now running their own units, while 15 to 20 people are currently associated with weaving work at his home.
Appealing to the youth, he said unemployment is a global challenge and traditional crafts offer a sustainable livelihood. “Instead of only looking for white-collar jobs, young people should join this field. It has immense potential, and even women can earn a respectable livelihood from home through this craft,” he said.
The awardees also urged the government to revisit existing loan policies for artisans. “Loan schemes should be made more accessible and repayment should be designed in a way that does not burden artisans. Better financial support will help preserve and strengthen this traditional industry,” they added. (KNO)
