Says Rs 31-cr Sgr abattoir revived; AIIMS block may open this year

‘Pvt universities likely soon; film festival to promote local talent’

Srinagar, Aug 20: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said Pakistan’s summoning of the US Charge d’Affaires following his meeting with the American envoy was a matter between Pakistan and the United States.

Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, CM Omar as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said that Pakistan had summoned the US Charge d’Affaires, not the US Ambassador. “The issue concerns Pakistan and the United States. I have nothing to do with it,” he added.

Responding to questions on the Congress party’s remarks, the Chief Minister said the party is entitled to its political viewpoint and he doesn’t want to get into a “war of words” over the issue.

On the modern abattoir, the Chief Minister said the project was initially conceived in 2011-12 but got stalled for various reasons. “It stands revived by the Srinagar Municipal Corporation and is expected to be completed within one-and-a-half years.”

He said the facility would ensure proper disease testing of sheep and halal certification before meat reaches the market. He said the administration also intends to revive the earlier system of inspection and stamping of meat.

“Whenever meat is sold in Srinagar, it should carry a market-authorised stamp so that people know it meets quality standards,” CM Omar said.

On the international film festival, the Chief Minister said its purpose is not merely to bring Bollywood or Hollywood personalities to Kashmir, but also to expose local audiences to diverse cinema and create opportunities for local talent.

He said workshops in editing, directing, cinematography and music would be organised to help local technicians develop skills and reduce dependence on professionals from outside when films are shot in Jammu and Kashmir.

On AIIMS, CM Omar said construction work is progressing rapidly and expressed hope that one of its blocks would become operational this year, with OPD and some other treatment facilities beginning services.

Regarding the proposed Law University, he said the varsity would be established and discussions were underway regarding its location. The file, he said is almost ready and would require the necessary approvals.

The Chief Minister also said one or two private universities are expected to come to Jammu and Kashmir in the coming weeks, adding that the government had finalised and will release rules following the passage of the relevant Act during the Budget Session.

He added the process for setting up private universities had now begun and foundation stones for some projects could be laid soon. (KNO)
