18-year-old undergoes endoscopic septoplasty; hospital to undertake various ear, nose, throat, thyroid procedures
Kangan, Sep 25 (KNO): ENT operations have been resumed at the Kangan Trauma Hospital after a gap of nearly nine years, with doctors performing an endoscopic septoplasty on an 18-year-old boy patient, officials said.
Dr Asif Mahajan, ENT Surgeon at Trauma Hospital Kangan, said the hospital has restarted ENT surgical procedures, with the latest procedure involving an endoscopic septoplasty to correct a severely deviated nasal septum.
“After almost nine years, we have restarted ENT operations at this hospital. The operation we performed today was a septoplasty, which we carried out using an endoscope. This procedure is called endoscopic septoplasty,” Dr Mahajan said.
He said Medical Superintendent Dr Nazir Ahmad played a key role in restarting the procedures by extending support and facilitating the procurement of required instruments besides motivating the operation theatre staff.
Dr Mahajan said the ENT department can undertake various procedures involving the ear, nose and throat, including surgeries for perforated eardrums, nasal blockage caused by a deviated septum, throat-related conditions, vocal polyps, tonsil-related conditions and thyroid problems.
“Patients from Kangan suffering from problems such as a perforated eardrum, nasal blockage due to a deviated septum, voice problems such as vocal polyps, or thyroid-related problems can approach us, and we can operate on such cases here,” he said.
The doctor expressed gratitude to the Medical Superintendent and the OT team, including Dr Zahoor, Head of Anaesthesia, Dr Masrat, anaesthesia doctor, and team members Sheikh Gauhar, Basit and Showkat, for their support in restarting ENT surgeries at the facility.
Regarding the patient operated upon, Dr Mahajan said the 18-year-old had been suffering from severe nasal blockage, difficulty in breathing, particularly while sleeping, and occasional nasal bleeding.
“He used to sleep with his mouth open because he was unable to breathe properly. He also had problems during the daytime and occasionally experienced bleeding from the nose,” he said.
Upon examination, the patient was found to have a severely deviated nasal septum. A CT scan of the paranasal sinuses was subsequently conducted, following which the need for surgery was established.
The patient underwent the required blood investigations and anaesthesia assessment and was operated on after being declared fit for surgery.
