SHOPIAN, SEPTEMBER 28: The Office of the Chief Education Officer, Shopian, organised an Environment Building Programme under the aegis of Samagra Shiksha, Inclusive Education Component, with the objective of sensitising teachers, parents and other community stakeholders towards the educational needs, rights and inclusion of Children with Special Needs (CWSN) enrolled in various schools of District Shopian.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Education Officer, Shopian, as per an official statement, said that inclusive education is not merely an administrative or institutional responsibility but a collective social commitment to ensure dignity, equality and equal educational opportunities for every child. He emphasised that no child should feel excluded, neglected or disadvantaged because of disability or any other special educational need. He stressed that the true measure of an inclusive school is not merely the presence of a child with special needs in the classroom, but the extent to which that child is able to participate, learn, communicate, develop confidence and feel an equal and valued member of the school community.
He further highlighted the need for schools to progressively strengthen their infrastructure and accessibility facilities and ensure that teachers are adequately sensitised and equipped with appropriate pedagogical strategies to address the individual learning requirements of CWSN. He called upon teachers to adopt a compassionate and child-centred approach, recognising that every child has unique abilities, strengths and potential.
The CEO also underscored the pivotal role of parents and the community in promoting inclusive education. He stated that sustained collaboration between schools and parents is essential for identifying the needs of children at an early stage, providing timely support and ensuring continuity between home and school-based interventions.
Emphasising the importance of changing societal attitudes, the Chief Education Officer called for collective efforts to move beyond sympathy towards acceptance, empowerment and meaningful participation of children with special needs. He observed that an inclusive education system ultimately contributes towards building a more sensitive, equitable and compassionate society.
The CEO further reiterated that the Education Department, Shopian, remains committed to strengthening the Inclusive Education Component of Samagra Shiksha and to ensuring that every child, irrespective of individual differences or disabilities, receives an opportunity to learn in a safe, supportive and enabling environment.
The Deputy Chief Education Officer, in his inaugural address, highlighted the importance of creating an inclusive, supportive and barrier-free educational environment where children with special needs can learn, participate and thrive alongside their peers.
The Dy. CEO emphasised that meaningful inclusion requires appropriate infrastructure, accessibility facilities and adequately trained human resources capable of responding to the diverse educational needs of children with special needs. He further stressed the importance of fostering an empathetic and child-friendly environment in schools and classrooms so that CWSN are provided equal opportunities to participate in the teaching-learning process and realise their full potential.
Comprehensive training and awareness sessions were subsequently delivered by Special Education Teachers, who sensitised the participants about various dimensions of inclusive education, identification of special educational needs, classroom support strategies, appropriate pedagogical interventions and the importance of creating an enabling environment for CWSN.
The resource persons also highlighted the role of teachers and parents in promoting confidence, dignity, participation and independence among children with special needs. The participants were sensitised about the importance of removing physical, instructional and social barriers that may hinder the meaningful participation of CWSN in school activities.
The programme witnessed active participation of teachers, parents and other stakeholders. The participants appreciated the initiative and emphasised the need for sustained awareness and capacity-building programmes to further strengthen inclusive practices across schools of the district.
The programme concluded with a renewed commitment from all stakeholders towards building an education system where every child is respected, supported and given the opportunity to realise his or her fullest potential.
