KULGAM, OCTOBER 10: Information Department Kulgam, in collaboration with Government Degree College (GDC) Kulgam, Saturday organised a seminar on “Social Media Ethics” under the Youth Engagement/Empowerment Plan at GDC Kulgam to sensitise students about the responsible and ethical use of social media.
Deputy Commissioner Kulgam, Shahzad Alam, was the Chief Guest at the event.
The programme, as per an official statement, commenced with a street play organised by the Information Department and performed by local artists, highlighting the importance of responsible online behaviour and awareness about the potential risks associated with social media.
Following the street play, District Information Officer (DIO) Kulgam, Showkat Hussain Ganie, delivered the inaugural address, highlighting the importance of social media ethics and responsible online behaviour. He emphasised the need to use social media judiciously, verify information before sharing and avoid spreading misinformation.
Following his address, the DIO delivered a presentation and led an interactive session debating and highlighting various issues related to social media, including responsible posting, appropriate online behaviour, AI use, digital etiquette and the importance of exercising caution while sharing information on digital platforms.
Prof. Adil Bashir Bhat, GDC Kulgam presented the expert talk on digital literacy.
Principal, GDC Kulgam, Prof. Dr Mohd Abass Shah addressed the gathering, stressing the importance of digital literacy, online safety and ethical conduct in the digital space.
Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner, emphasized the constructive role of social media in education, awareness and public engagement. He urged students to use digital platforms judiciously, avoid fake news and online misconduct, and contribute positively to society through responsible digital participation. He also outlined the historical context of evolving social and communication technologies and underscored self-correcting mechanism for consuming and sharing information for public good.
Pamphlets covering various aspects of social media ethics, responsible online behaviour, digital safety and cybercrime awareness were distributed among students.
Information regarding cybercrime reporting, including the cybercrime helpline number 1930 and the official website cybercrime.gov.in, was also shared with the students to familiarise them with the available reporting mechanisms.
The event also featured interactive sessions and speeches by students, who shared their views on responsible social media usage, highlighted issues related to social media and stressed the importance of reporting cybercrime.
The students and faculty members who spoke on the topic were felicitated by the Deputy Commissioner, Principal GDC Kulgam and DIO Kulgam in presence of senior faculty members, staff and students.
