Budgam, Nov 02: In strong display of political support, a youth from Kishtwar has postponed his wedding to attend the public gathering scheduled to be addressed by Srinagar Member Parliament Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Tuesday at Behisht-e-Zehra Park, Budgam, where the MP is expected to announce his resignation from the National Conference and Lok Sabha.
The youth, identified as Abrrar Ahmad said that his wedding had been scheduled for November 2-3, but he decided to reschedule it after Ruhullah announced the date of his resignation programme, so that he could participate in the gathering.
Ahmad said he had met Ruhullah earlier and informed him about his fixed wedding date. However, following the announcement of November 3 for the public gathering, he decided to postpone the wedding to attend the event.
Explaining his admiration for the MP, Ahmad said he was impressed by Ruhullah’s commitment to his words and promises, adding that he believed principles and commitments should take precedence over political positions.
He said that despite holding the position of an MP, Ruhullah has decided to relinquish his seat, which, according to him, reflects his commitment to the concerns of the people.
Asked whether Ruhullah would receive widespread public support after resigning, Ahmad said, “Standing up for what one believes to be right requires courage,” he added.
He also referred to Ruhullah’s parliamentary speeches, particularly his interventions on Article 370, and said issues concerning unemployment, youth distress and drug abuse needed greater attention.
Ahmad argued that addressing unemployment and the lack of opportunities for young people was important in tackling the growing problem of drug abuse, adding that the government should focus on creating employment opportunities alongside anti-drug initiatives.
Ahmad, who travelled from Kishtwar to attend the gathering, said the MP’s decision had encouraged him and others who believe that political commitments and public trust should take precedence over positions of power.
The November 3 gathering is expected to witness participation from supporters and people from different parts of Jammu and Kashmir, amid the political developments surrounding Ruhullah’s proposed resignation—(KNO)
