Attack On Kashmiri Student: Justice Must Be Swift And Certain

The reprehensible attack on a Kashmiri postgraduate student at Government Medical College, Jammu, where his accommodation was vandalised and he was subjected to communal slurs, is not an isolated incident but a disturbing symptom of a deeper malaise. That such an act was allegedly perpetrated by fellow medical professionals makes it even more condemnable. This is an assault on the very idea of India as a harmonious, pluralistic society. The incident strikes at the heart of the constitutional values of dignity and fraternity. When a young doctor, dedicated to saving lives, is targeted with hate-filled abuse and property destruction, it reveals a dangerous erosion of empathy and ethics. Such actions traumatise not just the individual but entire communities, creating alienation and fear among students who travel far from home to pursue education and contribute to the nation. The government must respond with unequivocal sternness. A swift, transparent investigation must be conducted, and the perpetrators – regardless of their position or influence – must face stringent legal and disciplinary consequences. The GMC Jammu administration must initiate an internal inquiry and demonstrate zero tolerance for such misconduct. Medical institutions are meant to be temples of healing and humanity; they cannot become spaces where prejudice and intimidation thrive. Beyond punitive measures, proactive institutional reforms are essential. A robust grievance redressal mechanism, sensitisation programmes promoting inter-community harmony, and clear protocols to address harassment must be implemented across educational and professional spaces. The administration must send a clear message: such acts will not be tolerated, and every student, irrespective of origin, will be protected. Kashmiris are not outsiders in their own country; they are integral to India’s cultural and professional fabric. To allow such incidents to go unpunished is to betray the trust of millions who believe in unity amid diversity. The government must act decisively, not just to deliver justice in this case, but to ensure it is never repeated. The soul of our nation depends on it.
