The Director Tourism Kashmir has vowed to leave “no stone unturned” in boosting tourism, signalling a crucial and welcome evolution in policy. The emphasis announced on International Mountain Day, not merely on increasing footfall but on anchoring growth in sustainability, regulation, and responsibility, is the only viable path forward for an industry built upon the region’s fragile and breathtaking ecology. For too long, the debate has been trapped in a binary: between promoting tourism and preserving the environment. Declaring that “tourism cannot grow if natural resources degrade”, and outlining measures like strict waste disposal guidelines for high-altitude treks, plantation drives, and a clear eco-tourism strategy reflects a mature understanding. The true “product” Kashmir offers is its pristine natural beauty and cultural integrity; degrading it for short-term gains is an economic and ecological dead end. The planned diversification is equally strategic. By bolstering winter adventure sports like heli-skiing and paragliding and organising festive carnivals, the department aims to extend the tourism season beyond the traditional summer months. This can ensure more stable year-round livelihoods and reduce pressure on popular destinations during peak seasons. The upcoming toy convention and travel trade meet are also smart initiatives to rebuild professional networks and explore new circuits. However, the stark challenge of climate change, acknowledged by the Director, looms large. The delayed snowfall this season is a potent reminder that this vision depends on environmental stability. While Kashmir cannot single-handedly reverse global trends, the proposed local actions, from conservation drives to regulating visitor impact, are essential forms of climate adaptation. They are investments in the industry’s resilience. The success of this promising blueprint will hinge entirely on rigorous implementation and consistent enforcement. Guidelines for operators must be mandatory, not suggestive. Awareness programmes for tourists and locals must be continuous.
