The conferment of the National Handloom Award on Manzoor Ahmad Hajam and Fayaz Ahmad Wani – two master weavers from Kanihama, Budgam – is a celebration of Kashmir’s centuries-old craft tradition and a recognition of the skill, patience, and dedication that keep it alive in an age of machines and mass production. The Chand-Daar Kani Shawl, their award-winning creation, is a masterpiece woven through coded Talim scripts and nearly 20 distinct hues. This is storytelling through threads, where every knot carries the memory of generations. The award, carrying a citation and a 2.5 lakh rupees cash prize, is a fitting tribute to their artistry and the countless hours of labour that went into recreating an antique masterpiece with absolute precision. This recognition also places the Kani weaving technique at the forefront of the crafts sector. For too long, traditional crafts have struggled against industrialisation, cheaper machine-made alternatives, and changing consumer preferences. Awards like these change the narrative. They signal that excellence in traditional crafts is not just valued but celebrated at the highest level of the nation. For thousands of weavers in Kashmir, this is a moment of immense pride and inspiration, a reminder that their craft is not dying but thriving. The Modi government deserves appreciation for its consistent efforts to promote and empower traditional artisans. By instituting and celebrating awards like the National Handloom Award, the government has created a platform where master weavers receive the recognition they have long deserved. The National Handloom Day celebrations and the awards conferred by the President reflect a genuine commitment to preserving and promoting India’s rich textile heritage. By honouring master weavers, the government sends a clear message: traditional artisans are not relics of the past but contributors to the nation’s cultural and economic future. This honour is also a reminder that the Handicrafts and Handloom Department has a vital role to play. It must continue to provide support, training, and market access to weavers, ensuring that such excellence is nurtured and not left to individual effort alone. Congratulations to Manzoor Ahmad Hajam and Fayaz Ahmad Wani. Their hands have woven a legacy that deserves to be cherished, celebrated, and passed on. They have become role models for thousands, and the entire craft community celebrates this joyous moment with great pride.
