BJP’s next battlegrounds: UP, Punjab, Goa, Himachal among 7 states

New Delhi, May 04: Assembly polls in seven states, including Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh, in 2027 are the next battlegrounds for the BJP which established its dominance in eastern India with its stunning performance in West Bengal and Assam assembly polls on Monday.

The BJP has already begun preparations for the elections in these states with party chief Nitin Nabin setting in motion ground work for the party’s electoral foray next year.

“As the elections in the five states have concluded, the party will now shift its focus to the polls due to be held in seven states next year. Some groundworks have already been set in motion by party president Nitin Nabin. It will now be ramped up,” a source in the BJP said.

Nabin has already visited Goa, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh to participate in various programmes and held closed-door meetings with key party functionaries and leaders during his stay to plan the party’s poll strategy in these states.

He will soon embark on a visit to Uttarakhand which will go to polls along with Goa, Gujarat, Manipur, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh next year. The BJP is in power in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa while AAP rules Punjab and the Congress is at the helm in Himachal Pradesh.

Addressing an event organised here at the BJP headquarters to celebrate the party’s success in the just concluded assembly polls in four states and a Union Territory, Nabin said the results of the elections were clear indications that people of the country continue to repose “unwavering trust” in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

“From Gangotri to Ganga Sagar, the NDA-BJP government is being formed. This is not only a geographical expansion but also an expansion of people’s trust in our leadership and his vision,” the BJP chief said.

“On this day, I assure my beloved leader and illustrious prime minister of the country, Narendra Modi ji of this: ‘You lead the way. The workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party have already set about preparing for the times ahead with full determination and a spirit of dedication,” Nabin declared.

On Monday, the BJP was poised to form its first government in West Bengal as it raced ahead in more than 200 seats, way past the majority mark in the 294-member state assembly to end the TMC’s 15-year rule in the state.

In Assam, the BJP-led NDA won or was leading in 102 of the 126 Assembly seats, comfortably crossing the majority mark of 64. The BJP alone won 81 seats and was leading in one more constituency.

In Tamil Nadu, the BJP ended up winning just one seat out of 20 it contested in alliance with the AIADMK.

The BJP made significant gains in Kerala by winning three assembly seats. It has long struggled to secure a political foothold in the state which has traditionally witnessed a bipolar contest between the UDF and LDF.
