A Warning For The Himalayas

The findings of a recent study are deeply concerning. For decades, the picturesque valleys of Pahalgam and Gulmarg have drawn tourists from across the world, promising pristine snow and cool climes. Now, science tells us that these very regions are warming faster than the rest, with temperatures rising by nearly 1°C over the past two decades. This is a present reality. The phenomenon of Elevation-Dependent Warming (EDW) is particularly alarming. High-altitude areas, which should naturally remain cooler, are experiencing stronger temperature rises than the plains. The winter warming, driven largely by shrinking snow cover and reduced albedo – the reflective power of white surfaces – is a vicious cycle. Less snow means darker ground, which absorbs more heat, leading to even less snow. This cycle threatens the very existence of glaciers that feed the rivers sustaining millions of people in the subcontinent. Equally concerning is the faster rise in night-time temperatures. For mountain communities and ecosystems, reduced night-time cooling disrupts natural rhythms, affecting agriculture, biodiversity, and water availability. The IIT Kharagpur study’s finding that observations above 3,000 metres remain limited is a gap that the government must urgently address. Without reliable data from high-altitude stations, our understanding of the crisis remains incomplete. The implications of this warming are not merely academic. Reduced snowfall and accelerated glacier melt will directly impact the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab river systems, threatening agriculture, drinking water, and hydropower. The fragile Himalayan ecosystem, home to rare species and unique biodiversity, is under unprecedented stress. For communities in the region, climate change has become a survival issue. The government must treat this study as a red alert. First, a network of high-altitude weather stations must be established to fill critical data gaps. Second, adaptation strategies must be developed for agriculture, water management, and tourism. Third, policies promoting sustainable tourism, reducing carbon footprints, and protecting forests must be implemented with urgency. Finally, local communities must be educated and involved in climate resilience efforts. The Himalayas are the water tower of Asia. The warming of Pahalgam and Gulmarg is a warning bell. It is time to listen, before it is too late.
