Ethical Tourism Must Be J&K’s Guiding Light

Ethical Tourism Must Be J&K’s Guiding Light
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterWhatsapp

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha’s call for ethical tourism to be the guiding principle of Jammu and Kashmir’s future is both timely and necessary. His emphasis on responsible, sustainable, and inclusive tourism is a moral imperative for a region whose identity is inseparable from its natural and cultural heritage. Kashmir has long been celebrated as “heaven on earth”, a title earned through the unique harmony between its breathtaking landscapes and its rich cultural traditions. Yet, this harmony is fragile. Unchecked development, environmental degradation, and the exploitation of natural resources threaten to erode the very essence of what makes Kashmir special. Development must proceed in balance with conservation is a crucial acknowledgement of this reality. The proposal for certification standards for eco-friendly homestays is a welcome step. It encourages healthy competition while ensuring that tourism infrastructure develops with minimal ecological impact. Equally significant is the emphasis on inclusivity, ensuring that boatmen, pony owners, artisans, and families running homestays are not mere spectators but equal stakeholders in the tourism journey. Profits must not remain confined to large enterprises; they must reach the last village, the last family, and the last citizen. Sustainable tourism is not just about preserving nature; it is about creating dignified livelihoods for local communities. When youth are trained to become protectors of nature and guardians of culture, tourism becomes a force for social transformation. When technology is linked with culture, and innovation with environmental conservation, Kashmir can emerge as a model of sustainable tourism for the entire nation. The true success of tourism lies not in numbers alone but in ensuring that prosperity reaches local communities and contributes to social inclusion. Every visitor should depart with cherished memories, and natural resources should thrive. That is the essence of ethical tourism—a vision that Kashmir must now embrace with urgency and purpose.
