Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha’s call to embrace millet cultivation as a pathway to self-reliance and resilience against climate change is a timely reminder that solutions to modern problems often lie in ancestral wisdom. Millets were once the backbone of Indian agriculture. They nourished generations, grew in the harshest conditions, required minimal water, and needed no chemical support. Yet they were pushed to the margins, dismissed as “food of the poor” while polished rice and refined wheat took centre stage. The cost of that shift is now evident—rising lifestyle diseases, depleting groundwater, degraded soils, and farmers trapped in cycles of debt. The return of millets is not nostalgia. It is strategy. For Jammu and Kashmir, where over 80 per cent of farmers are small and marginal and dependent on unpredictable weather, millets offer something invaluable: confidence. They reduce risk, demand less, and provide more nutrition per acre than most staple crops. The health argument is equally compelling. India is witnessing an epidemic of non-communicable diseases—diabetes, hypertension, obesity—that now account for a majority of deaths. Millets, with their low glycaemic index, high fibre, and rich micronutrients, offer a simple, affordable, and culturally rooted solution. Bringing bajra rotis, ragi dishes, and barnyard millet rice back to our tables is not a sacrifice; it is a return to good sense. The economic potential is immense. India produces 18 million tonnes of millets, accounting for 38 per cent of global production. Value-added millet products, driven by women’s self-help groups and young entrepreneurs, can become the next success story of rural enterprise. But none of this will happen automatically. Farmers need support, scientists must develop better varieties, doctors must spread awareness, and citizens must change habits. The time for discussion is over. Millets are not merely a heritage of the past—they are a strategy for the future. Let us sow the seeds today for a healthier, more sustainable tomorrow.
