JAMMU, MAY 03: Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) Sunday organized a comprehensive sanitation drive at the pond located in Ward No. 63, Gurah Brahmana, Bantalab.

The initiative forms part of JMC’s sustained campaign to preserve, restore and maintain water bodies across the city, ensuring their long-term ecological health and utility.

The drive, as per an official statement, was carried out under the leadership of MLA Jammu North Sham Lal Sharma and Commissioner, JMC Dr. Devansh Yadav.

The campaign witnessed active participation from Disha NGO, local residents, volunteers and municipal staff, highlighting a growing sense of civic responsibility and collective ownership among the public.

During the drive, accumulated waste, silt and debris were cleared from the pond and its surrounding areas.

The initiative aimed not only at immediate cleaning but also at sensitizing citizens about the importance of protecting water bodies from pollution and neglect.

The JMC reiterated that such drives are part of a larger, continuous effort to rejuvenate urban water resources and improve environmental conditions across Jammu city.

Addressing the gathering, Sham Lal Sharma emphasized that water bodies are vital ecological assets that require consistent care and protection. He noted that unchecked pollution and negligence can severely impact these resources and therefore, community participation is indispensable. To ensure sustained monitoring and upkeep, he announced that a local committee would be constituted in coordination with residents to oversee sanitation efforts and prevent future contamination.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Devansh Yadav underscored that raising public awareness is central to the success of such initiatives. He appealed to citizens to refrain from disposing of garbage, plastics and other waste materials into ponds, drains and open spaces. He further urged residents to maintain cleanliness in their localities and adopt responsible waste management practices in their daily lives.

The Commissioner stressed that behavioral change at the grassroots level is key to achieving long-term environmental sustainability. He called upon citizens to take ownership of their surroundings and actively contribute towards maintaining a clean and healthy urban environment. Clean surroundings not only enhance the quality of life but also play a crucial role in safeguarding public health and natural resources.

Local residents welcomed the initiative and expressed their support for continued cleanliness and conservation efforts. The active involvement of the community served as a testament to the effectiveness of awareness-driven campaigns in encouraging public participation.

The Jammu Municipal Corporation reiterated that this sanitation drive is part of its broader strategy to strengthen civic engagement and promote citizen-led initiatives. Through continuous awareness campaigns, field-level interventions and collaborative efforts with the public, JMC aims to build a cleaner, greener and more sustainable Jammu.
