Auqib Nabi’s Selection A New Chapter For Kashmir’s Cricket

When Auqib Nabi stepped onto the cricket field as a young boy in a remote village of Baramulla, he probably dreamed of representing his country. But for a fast bowler from Kashmir, where sporting infrastructure is limited and opportunities scarce, that dream must have seemed distant. Today, that dream has become a reality. Nabi’s selection to India’s Test squad for the Sri Lanka tour is a historic milestone for Jammu and Kashmir. He becomes the first cricketer from the Kashmir valley to earn a Test call-up, joining the ranks of Parvez Rasool and Umran Malik, who represented India in limited-overs cricket. But this is different. Test cricket is the ultimate challenge, and Nabi has earned his place through sheer determination and outstanding performance. The numbers speak for themselves. One hundred and four wickets across the last two Ranji Trophy seasons, including 60 in the 2025-26 campaign, played a pivotal role in Jammu and Kashmir’s maiden Ranji Trophy triumph. This was not luck. This was the result of years of hard work, sacrifice, and an unyielding belief in his abilities. Auqib Nabi is a symbol of what is possible when talent meets perseverance. His selection is a proud moment not just for his family or his village, but for every young sportsperson in Kashmir who has been told that their dreams are too big for their circumstances. It sends a powerful message: geography does not define destiny. With the right support, dedication, and opportunity, talent from every corner of the country can shine on the national stage. As Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha rightly said, this is a moment of immense pride for Jammu and Kashmir. It is also a reminder that the region is brimming with potential that awaits discovery and nurturing. Auqib Nabi has shown the way. Now it is up to the system to ensure that his journey is not an exception but the beginning of a new chapter for Kashmiri cricket.
